The restaurant/foodservice industry was one of the industries that was hit the hardest by the pandemic. Government lockdowns and restrictions on indoor dining for most of 2020 and even into 2021. As restaurants reopened, almost all restaurants are having difficulty finding workers. The hope was that the labor shortage would start easing as we entered the fall. This does not appear to be the case. According to The Washington Post, “millions of restaurant workers have left the industry with no plans to return despite increased job openings.”
